This year our resolutions are about standing up for our civil liberties; protecting the safety net for the poor, the disabled and the elderly; and recognizing the role of science in dealing with the environment and global warming. The incoming President and Congress have already targeted most of these programs for serious damage.
2017 NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS
Start by selecting the most effective organizations that support the causes and values you care about. Next, decide the total amount of money you want to spend on donations in 2017. Divide the total donation sum among the organizations you choose. Here are some of our choices:
American Civil Liberties Union
Largest, most effective organization that defends the civil rights guaranteed to us by the Constitution and laws of the United States. Founded January 19, 1920.
Largest, most effective organization that provides reproductive health care; sex education, counseling and information. Also does: cancer screening for women; testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases/infections for men and women, and more. In 2014, Planned Parenthood saw over 2.5 million patients in its more than 800 health centers throughout the U.S. (Abortions were only 3% of services rendered.) Provides medical services to many people close to poverty level. Partly funded by the federal government. Congress has threatened to defund it. Founded October 16, 1916.
A liberal, political advocacy group. Promotes “equal rights, opportunity, and representation for all: and empowering all people to make their voices heard in the political process.” Currently concerned about changing the Electoral College so that every voter in all 50 states has a voice in presidential elections. Founded 1970
The largest and most effective, progressive organizing group in the United States. Pioneered online organizing and advocacy techniques used everywhere. Divided into two sections: MoveOn.org Civic Action, focusing on education and advocacy; and MoveOn.org Political Action, a federal PAC focusing on running powerful progressive advocacy campaigns. MoveOn can give each one of us opportunities to become effective activists in promoting democracy. Founded 1998.
Union of Concerned Scientists
An activist organization calling for scientific research to be directed away from military technologies and toward solving pressing environmental and social problems for a healthier planet and a safer world. Provides strong support for reining in human behavior that causes climate warming. Founded 1968.
We are already dealing with an increase in hate crimes and hate propaganda around the country, aimed at refugees, blacks, Muslims, Jews and others. Cowardly people who normally would hesitate to act on their violent impulses have taken courage from the recent election and have been spreading fear and destruction. It’s our job not to keep silent, but to protest words of hate, as well as acts.
