Who We Are

Marge ApelMarjorie Apel, Co-founder,

Over a long and varied academic career, Marjorie has been a teacher and guidance counselor, as well as the Director of Career Services at Manhattan College in Riverdale NY. Career counseling has been her focus of interest for over 20 years and continues to be so as she helps older women decide what to do with their next stage of life. She is also the president of a real estate firm in New York City and Long Island and, in addition, an elected official for over a decade in her local community.

Marjorie has been a wife, a mother, and is now the doting grandmother of two boys. She has been privileged to provide living quarters for Cleo, the cat who writes an instructive column for pet cats who need pointers on training their humans.

Marjorie has a BS in Education from Syracuse University, Syracuse NY, and an MA in Guidance and Student Personnel Administration from Columbia University, New York NY.

faithevans24Nov15 Faith Evans, Co-founder,

Faith has been a teacher, a librarian, a counselor for troubled youth, a principal in a small advertising agency, a writer of newsletters, a teller of tales (tall and short), and a volunteer for many causes. She is also a wife, mom, grandmother, and the owner of a series of very spoiled dogs. Max, her latest pup (with his own pool and over-flowing toy chest) writes a column for other dogs who wish they were in his shoes.

In another century when telephones were big, black and stapled to the wall, Faith received a BA in Psychology and English from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn NY, and an MLS from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn NY.

Barbara Shapiro, Research Consultant

Barbara was lucky enough to find her ideal career early while working in her high school library. She got her BA at Ohio State University and then went on to Case Western University, Cleveland OH, for a Masters in Library Science. As graduation approached and library recruiters came calling, Barbara fell under the lure of Broadway. She came east and began a life-long career with The New York Public Library, initially working with teenagers.

After several years, Barbara moved on to become a reference librarian, specializing in helping job hunters, career changers, and adults looking for opportunities in adult continuing education. From there she became the New York Public Library’s Head of General Reference Services. Barbara’s final, triumphant career move was to become Coordinator of Adult Services for all the New York Public Library’s local branches, where she trained new librarians in the many aspects of providing services for adults.

Barbara’s comment on her professional life: “What a privilege it’s been to be a librarian in an age of technology which has opened such vast reservoirs of information for so many people!”
