Barbara Shapiro, Research Consultant
Barbara was lucky enough to find her ideal career early while working in her high school library. She got her BA at Ohio State University and then went on to Case Western University, Cleveland OH, for a Masters in Library Science. As graduation approached and library recruiters came calling, Barbara fell under the lure of Broadway. She came east and began a life-long career with The New York Public Library, initially working with teenagers.
After several years, Barbara moved on to become a reference librarian, specializing in helping job hunters, career changers, and adults looking for opportunities in adult continuing education. From there she became the New York Public Library’s Head of General Reference Services. Barbara’s final, triumphant career move was to become Coordinator of Adult Services for all the New York Public Library’s local branches, where she trained new librarians in the many aspects of providing services for adults.
Barbara’s comment on her professional life: “What a privilege it’s been to be a librarian in an age of technology which has opened such vast reservoirs of information for so many people!”
